A Round World meets Gokh-Bi System

While assembling artists for A ROUND WORLD, Doug Deutsch was introduced to Gokh-Bi System by Toni Blackman, A ROUND WORLD's Musical Ambassador of the U.S.

October 2002
Our journey began with Gokh-Bi, A ROUND WORLD's Musical Ambassadors from Senegal, arriving at A ROUND WORLD headquarters in New York City. We instantly became brothers and went on to record our first three songs with world class musician, composer and producer Olivier Glissant at Blacksalt Studios in Queens, New York and film two music videos including Mission of Music and Mama Afrika with award winning Film Director and Producer Joshua Atesh Litle of JFILMIC. Mission will appear in Mr. Litle's current film project "The Furious Forces of Rhymes".

October 2003
A ROUND WORLD and Blacksalt Studios went mobile and together journeyed to Dakar, Senegal to record an additional eight tracks for a full album release.

Gokh-Bi System History

Gokh-Bi which means "Neighborhood", was formed in 1994 in Pikine, Guinaw Rail (the other side of the tracks), an impoverished suburb of Dakar, Senegal. The members of the band represent three different ethnic groups, the Jola, the Serer and the Wolof peoples of Senegal. Friends and brothers living in the ghetto, they discovered hip-hop and felt a kinship to it's themes of poverty, inequality and injustice.

Started as a rap group backed by synthetic beats, the band's music has evolved into a spirited blend of traditional Senegal music, hip-hop, funk and soul with themes centering on peace, love and justice.

Since their first U.S. visit in 1999, this Senegalese hip-hop crew has exposed tens of thousands of American school children to African music and dance through performances and workshops. They have also performed live with Angelique Kidjo, Damien Marley, Michael Franti (Spearhead), Culture, Toni Blackman, The Lost Poets, and Toots & the Maytals, among others.

Gokh-Bi will also represent A ROUND WORLD as Musical Ambassadors from Senegal in the soon to be released "Tune Travels" program for kids.

Gokh-Bi ("The Neighborhood") adds hip-hop to a Senegalese continuum. Their lively music sets positive-thinking raps (in English as well as Senegalese languages) to handmade music: percussion, singing and riffs plucked on the ekonting, a Senegalese lute. "Hip-hop takes a joyful, respectful place alongside traditionalism." John Paereles, NY Times.
